چکیده

The demand for wireless connectivity to the Internet is increasing. As the network grows and assimilates an increasing range of both wireless and wire line link technologies, it is becoming increasingly heterogeneous. Compared to wire line transmission technologies, practical radio data transmission technologies are far more limited in capacity and reliability. This has lead to the development of a range of mechanisms to improve the efficiency and reliability of radio data transmission. However, physical phenomena, both exogenous and endogenous to the radio link hardware, will ultimately lead to random fluctuations in the radio link capacity. User satisfaction will depend on the user’s application, and what requirements the application demands on the latency, reliability, and rate of data delivery over the network. In this thesis it is argued that a flow control mechanism is required, which takes into account the capacity, and reliability of the underlying network. It should endeavour to simultaneously satisfy the application’s requirements, as well as maximise the overall performance of the wireless component of the network. The goal of this thesis is to design such a flow control mechanism. Based around meeting this goal, the structure of this thesis is organised as follows. Packet data transmissions over a radio link are modelled. These models provide a technique to determine the effect of channel conditions on the distribution of packet transmission times and packet loss probability. These models are then applied to model static window flow control over a heterogeneous network. By applying this model, the performance of rate based flow control is critically compared to window based flow control. Conclusions drawn from studying these models, lead

Reliable Flow Control Coding in Low-Buffer Grid Networks

We consider a grid network where nodes contain small buffers. A packet that faces a crowded buffer in its route will get extra latency and may be dropped. In this paper, we propose a novel flow control protocol called RFCC for grid networks. RFCC tries to reroute delayed packets and utilizes network coding to introduce a configurable amount of redundant information in the network, thereby incre...

Third-order Decentralized Safe Consensus Protocol for Inter-connected Heterogeneous Vehicular Platoons

In this paper, the stability analysis and control design of heterogeneous traffic flow is considered. It is assumed that the traffic flow consists of infinite number of cooperative non-identical vehicular platoons. Two different networks are investigated in stability analysis of heterogeneous traffic flow: 1) inter-platoon network which deals with the communication topology of lead vehicles and...

Regulation of TCP Flow in Heterogeneous Networks Using Packet Discarding Schemes

Flow control in heterogeneous networks requires careful planning, especially in the case of TCP over ATM, because TCP and ATM each protocol has a different flow control mechanism. The early packet discard scheme (EPD) is commonly used with ATM's unspecified bit rate service (UBR). This thesis presents an improvement to EPD called single packet discard scheme (SPD). The new scheme drops a packet...

A Markov Decision Process based flow assignment framework for heterogeneous network access

We consider a scenario where devices with multiple networking capabilities access networks with heterogeneous characteristics. In such a setting, we address the problem of efficient utilization of multiple access networks (wireless and/or wireline) by devices via optimal assignment of traffic flows with given utilities to different networks. We develop and analyze a device middleware functional...
